"Est-ce que tu veux te battre ? Veux-tu te battre avec moi ?"
J'ai rencontré Marilyn Manson il y'a moins de deux minutes.
J'étais supposé interviewer le Prince des Ténèbres du rock, le Grotesque Goth qui, selon la légende, est à la fois un vampire, un zombie et un démon. Et c'est vraiment l'interview la plus étrange. Je m'attendais à ce qu'il soit un petit peu étrange – mais pas à ce point.
Je m'attendais aussi à ce que le shock rocker s'exprime de manière intelligente. Au vu des différentes interviews de lui que j'ai pu voir, je sais que Manson peut être le porte parole intelligent d'une génération troublée.
Mais aujourd'hui, il est clair que Manson est simplement troublé.
Il se trouve dans un studio douteux de la BBC, complexe Maida Vale, là où le groupe vient tout juste de finir une session radio. Notre interview prend place 4 heures plus tard. J'espère juste qu'il n'est pas tombé dans leur studio par erreur.
Il est donc à l'intérieur, vêtu de noir et de sa pâleur morbide habituelle, déconnant avec son groupe et les membres du staff. Dès le début, j'ai compris qu'il ne pouvait pas – ou ne voulait pas – donner des réponses cohérentes à mes questions, exceptés pour celles traitant du sexe et de la violence. Généralement des deux.
Sa préoccupation se porte plutôt sur le fait que j'ai ardemment édité ses commentaires en morceaux étant sordide et franchement dérangeant.
Je réalise l'interview avec un collègue, Adrian, de BBC 6 Music. Manson commence en déchirant la mousse recouvrant le micro d'Adrian, avant qu'il ne se fasse interroger à propos des fans.
"Mes fans ? Il n'y a pas de fan parce que j'étais vraiment chaud dans ma chambre."
Adrian essaye encore d'obtenir une réponse, ce à quoi Manson réplique : "Tu parles des fans du plafond ou des indépendants ?"
Il y a une étincelle dans ses yeux. Il joue avec nous, mais ses réponses sont également obscènes et aléatoires...
Il continue : "Est ce que c'est un téléphone ?" dit-il en regardant mon enregistreur, qui n'est clairement pas un téléphone. "Est-ce que je peux t'appeler ?" Dit-il. Il a alors mimé le début d'une bagarre, d'une manière plus joviale qu'agressive.
Adrian l'interroge alors à propos de Download Festival, là où Manson va se produire cet été. "Tu as dit Load et Down", interrompt Manson, comme s'il s'agissait des mots les plus sales du monde.
Je pose ma première question en tentant de changer de tactique. Peut-il se souvenir de la première fois où il s'est produit ?
"La première fois que j'ai fait un concert j'ai arrêté"
"Quand était-ce ?"
"La nuit dernière. Non, la première fois, j'ai eu la peur de la scène, de la peur et de The Frighteners, qui est un mauvais film avec – comment s'appelle t'il déjà ? - Michael J Fox. Alors je voudrais dire que la dernière fois... Quelle était la question ?"
Ensuite, j'ai essayé de l'interroger à propos de son lieu actuel de vie. La réponse est aléatoire, confuse, ponctuée de mots vulgaires et de référence à la violence sexuelle. Il a aussi commencé à faire des bruits bizarres.
Les réponses se terminent par : "Etc et cela, et wow, et (il fait encore plus de bruit) j'aime m'exprimer en ces termes"
Cela devient de plus en plus curieux... Je lui parle alors du film sur lequel il est supposé travailler, Phantasmagoria.
"Je le joue dans ma vie de tous les jours", réplique t'il. "J'ai écrit un script sur Caroll parce que j'avais lu son journal et cela parlait d'aphasie envers le ciel, le ciel, gauche, droite, et c'est moi".
"Alors, j'ai presque quitté la musique car je ne voulais plus en faire, j'ai donc voulu tout mettre dans un film. En ce moment, je suis amoureux des films. Mais à condition de me filmer moi même. Et je joue Marilyn Manson."
Où en est le film ? Avez-vous filmé (shot) quelque chose ?
"Non, mais j'ai tiré (shot) sur quelqu'un. Mais j'ai été relaxé"
J'espère en priant qu'il plaisante. Juste après, Adrian lui parle d'un de ses héros, Iggy Pop. Je demande pourquoi il n'a pas quitté la musique au lieu de faire un nouveau disque.
"C'est moi réalisant ce que je fais de mieux. Ce n'est pas toujours bon, mais c'est ce que je fais de mieux. Moi étant Marilyn Manson, une rock star, et cetera, c'est ce que je fais."
Alors le film va... mais je n'ai pas eu le temps de finir ma question.
"Tu veux une bagarre (fight) ou un film ?" Coupe t'il.

Sur le moment, cela paraît irréel, bizarre et amusant. Mais, à y réfléchir, c'est plutôt dérangeant. Pas horrifiant. Juste triste.
